New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics & IT on Monday summoned executives from Wikipedia and sought an explanation in connection with fake information linking Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh to the Khalistani movement on his Wikipedia page.
Indian seamer Arshdeep Singh was recently targeted with hate all over the internet after he dropped a crucial catch against Pakistan in the 18th over of the game on Sunday. India lost the game by five wickets.
According to media reports, the edit history of Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page showed the word “India” being replaced with “Khalistan” in several places on the page by an unregistered user.
The reports further added that a high-level committee is likely to question the executives as the disinformation could disturb communal harmony and lead to a law and order situation for the cricketer’s family.
As Singh was being targeted with hate, several cricketers and people came in support of the youngster. Indian star batsman Virat Kohli in the post-match interview backed him and added that it is part of the game to make mistakes in a high-pressure game. He further added that it is important to learn from these mistakes and be prepared for situations like these in future.
Veteran Cricketers poured in support for Arshdeep Singh, here are some of the reactions:
Every Indian is proud of #ArshdeepSingh. The issues related to cricket should be settled on cricket field only. Those who are paid to create rift among India’s unity must understand that Indians won’t buy your propaganda. We stand with our boys. 🙏🏽 pic.twitter.com/bVjqDBWCbq
