New Delhi: India is set to mark a significant milestone in its transportation sector with the launch of its first Vande Metro in July. The innovative train, designed to cater to intercity passengers covering distances of up to 250 km, will boast 12 coaches and feature seating arrangements akin to a metro train, as per reports.
The air-conditioned Vande Metro is poised to revolutionise the travel experience, with an expected maximum speed of 130 km per hour, as confirmed by one of the officials. Emphasising the passenger-centric design, the official highlighted the bench-type seating arrangement, which maximises capacity while ensuring a comfortable journey.
Trials for the Vande Metro trains are slated to be completed in the next two months, paving the way for operational readiness by July, as stated by a second official. Manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, the coaches are in their final stages of production, ready to usher in a new era of rail travel in India.
The Vande Metro trains come equipped with advanced safety features, including sensors for fire and smoke detection, ensuring a secure journey for passengers. Additionally, the Kavach system, aimed at preventing collisions, further enhances safety measures onboard. The design also prioritises passenger convenience, with wide gangways facilitating smooth movement between coaches and wheelchair-accessible lavatories installed in each coach.
For enhanced comfort and ease of access, the Vande Metro trains will feature automatic plug doors at entrances and touch-free doors in compartment areas, as highlighted by railway officials. Plans are underway to initially roll out the trains with 12 coaches, with the flexibility to extend up to 16 coaches based on demand.
