Jogi Movie Review: Diljit Dosanjh Shines But Intense Yet Drawl Sense Of 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

Date:

‘Jogi’ revisits the dark days of 1984 Delhi burnt after the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the complicity of politicians from Gandhi’s Congress Party in the slaughter of Sikhs and the attacks on their homes and businesses.

Only a few movies and documentaries have been made about the atrocities that occurred after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her Sikh bodyguards.

A political drama “Jogi” centers on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. Released on Netflix, the horrors are directed through a prism of thriller by Ali Abbas Zafar.

The singer turned actor, Diljit Dosanjh plays in the lead roles and Amyra Dastur, Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, Hiten Tejwani, Apinderdeep Singh, Neelu Kohli, Kumud Mishra in the povital roles.

The well-intentioned movie, Jogi is mostly about Joginder, charismatic young guy from a working- class family. Although it has fictional characters, it has real sense because of how the plot touches on the true essence of tragedy.

The assassination of Indira Gandhi turned his and worlds of many people around him, upside down, which is where the movie starts up.

As bloodthirsty marauders spread out carrying petrol cans with the purpose to burn and loot. Fear lingers over burning city. As rioters close in on his family and neighbors, the Sikh decides to save them on his own. Two friends, a Hindu and a Muslim lend him a helping hand.

He soon finds himself fighting for his very survival as ‘Delhi burns’. The rest of the film revolves around his attempts at protecting his people from imminent danger.

Jogi and his community attempt to flee to safer ground with the help of a friend, Ravinder, the character played by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, who is now in Delhi Police.

The Jogi-Ravinder partnership is threatened by Ravinder’s colleague Lali, the character played by Hiten Tejwani, who is among the law-enforcers turned law-breakers.

Jogi is an admirable effort simply because it addresses such a delicate subject. The fairly well-written screenplay allows the film’s intrinsically intense plot to live up to its potential.
