Fact Check: Video of Violent Protest Over Mahsa Amini’s Death Shared with False Claim

A video is being extensively shared on social media showing a violence in Leicester after India defeated Pakistan in a match during the 2022 Asia Cup in September. It has been claimed that it shows a Muslim man, who destroyed the temple, thrashed by the Hindu community in London.

The video was shared with a text: लंदन में मंदिर को तोड़ने वाला “जिहादी” को पीटा पुलिस की भी हिम्मत नही हुई बचाने की ऐसे ही सभी सनातनी को मिलकर कट्टरपंथी जिहादियों को सबक़ सिखाना पड़ेगा (English translation: The “Jihadi” who destroyed the temple in London was beaten up, and even the police did not dare to save him. In this way, all the Sanatani together will have to teach a lesson to the radical jihadis.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we found a similar video uploaded on the YouTube channel of Daily Mail, dated September 26, 2022, with a title: Iran protests turn violet in London: Riot police deployed, following the death of Mahsa Amini.

The video description reads: Iran protests turn violent in London: Riot police deployed, following the death of Mahsa Amini | Riot police deployed as clashes erupt at anti-hijab protests in London. Members of a religious procession appeared to tussle with those protesting against the Ayatollah regime while others attempted to breach the walls of the Iranian Embassy.

The same video was also shared by HuffPost and news.com.au. According to the report by news.com.au, at least 12 people were arrested and several police officers injured during a protest at the Iranian Embassy in London on September 25.

HuffPost attributed the video to a Twitter user Paul Brown. We scanned through his handle and found that he shared the video on September 25 with a caption: Iranian protesters and Arbaeen people fighting on the streets of Marble Arch London lots of punching, bottles thrown, hitting with sticks more police needed.

In this video, we can see a protester with a flag that reads ‘Freedom for Iran’.

Thus, based on the above fact check, it can be concluded that the video is being shared with a false claim.
