Fact Check: Viral Video Showing Ukraine Attacking Russian Tanks Is False

Russia and Ukraine have been at war since February 24, 2022. While Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine’s security services of attacking the Kerch bridge, Ukraine denied that they were behind the attack.

In the above context, a video has gone viral on social media showing some tanks hit by missiles. Many people claim that it’s the Ukrainian missiles attacking Russian tanks.

The video is shared with a caption: “Ukraine is hunting Russian tanks with American FGM – 148 Javelin missile.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be fake.

Doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the screenshots, we found a lengthy version of a similar video uploaded on a YouTube channel Milman, dated September 16, 2022, with a title: “Russian tanks try to escape from Ukrainian Javelin missiles. But Can’t – Arma 3 Game Simulator.” At around 2:31 timestamp, one can see the same clip as the viral video.

The video comes with a disclaimer: “This video was created with ARMA.. it is not completely representative of reality.. it is just a simulation of real news. Bohemia allows to make YouTube videos from their game and monetise it. Creating one video takes me about 4-8 hours, including editing in Adobe Premiere Pro.”

The About Us section of the website also mentioned that the viral clip is a video game.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
