A quote attributed to former England Cricket Captain and broadcaster Nasser Hussain is being widely shared on social media in the wake of India’s recent victory over Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The quote says, “The umpires made some weird decision in favour of India today but maybe we should keep quiet and not upset ICC and BCCI”.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.

Starting with our investigation, we found the same quote viral on Twitter as well. In reply to one of these tweets, Nasser Hussain said, “Probably best if you can delete this please .. it’s fake news and a fake quote and definitely not what a great game of cricket like today deserves !! Thanks”.

A Pakistani sports journalist was among the other Twitter users to point out that Hussain had discredited the false quote.

According to The Indian Express, Virat Kohli hit a full toss ball for six in the final over, which sparked the uproar. The umpires decided not to label it a “No ball” after Kohli objected that it should have been called a no-ball because it was above waist. Despite the Pakistani team’s protests, the ruling was upheld. Former Pakistani captains Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, and Shoaib Malik all agreed that the third umpire should have been consulted in this case.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral quote attributed to Nasser Hussain is fake.
