Fact Check: 2016 Image Erroneously Linked to the Recent Protest Against Poll Results in Brazil

Jair Bolsonaro, now former President of Brazil, faced defeat against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the Presidential elections held last month. Ever since his defeat, the supporters of Bolsonaro have taken to the streets to protest against the election results, which they feel were rigged.

Against this backdrop, a viral image of a tweet showing a huge gathering of people wearing yellow- and green-coloured attire, similar to the Brazilian flag, is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the image claiming it to be from the ongoing protest in Brazil.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with the following caption in a tweet: While we tweet…This is Brazil protesting election fraud.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture, and found it to be misleading.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search to check the authenticity of the viral claim, our team found a licensed image uploaded on the website of Associated Press Images

The image on the website matches exactly with the viral image and the description informs that it was shot in Brasilia on March 13, 2016 during a nationwide protest by the people, demanding the impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff. 

Another news article, titled: Pictures: An incredible THREE MILLION people have joined an anti-government protest in Brazil, published on March 14, 2016, on TheJournal.ie an internet Publication from Ireland, carries some pictures that match the viral image, and the article corroborates the claims made on Associated Press. It further informs that the increased corruption and recession enraged the Brazilians, demanding the removal of Rousseff from office immediately. Nearly three million people participated in the nationwide protest on March 13, 2016.

We could not find a single credible news source linking the picture to the ongoing protest in the country. Therefore, based on our investigation, we can conclusively say that the viral image, claiming to be a visual from the ongoing protest in Brazil, is misleading.
