MCD Gets Its First Transgender Councillor: 5 Things To Know About AAP’s Bobi Kinnar

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party’s Bobi Kinnar will be the first transgender member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after winning from Delhi’s Sultanpuri-A ward on Wednesday.

It is the first time when any party gave a ticket to a transgender.

Bobi defeated Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by 6714 votes. She secured 14821 votes while Dhaka managed to get 8107 votes.

Reacting to her victory, Bobi said, “I want to dedicate my victory to the people who worked so hard for me. I would like to thank everyone. Now I just have to work for development in my area.”

Who is Bobi? 

  • The 38-year-old was born and brought up in Sultanpuri. At the age of 14, Bobi was adopted by the transgender community and then she became a wedding dancer.
  • Bobi is the president of the Delhi unit of ‘Hindu Yuva Samaj Ekta Awam Anti-Terrorism Committee. She has been associated with the organisation for the last 15 years.
  • She has been an active social worker majorly working for transgenders’ empowerment.
  • Bobby Kinnar, who left a mark through social work in the ward, was found at the top of the survey and was declared a candidate for the municipal elections.
  • Bobby contested the Municipal Corporation elections in the year 2017 as an independent candidate.
