Fact Check: Prof Neena Gupta Is NOT the First Indian Woman to Receive Ramanujan Prize

Date:

A post has gone viral on social media claiming that Indian Mathematician Neena Gupta recently won the Ramanujan Prize, becoming the first Indian woman to win this award.

(English translation: This is Mathematician Neena Gupta. If you get free time from Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, then Indians should recognise her, too! She has been honoured with the Ramanujan Award. She is the only Indian woman to have won this award. This daughter of India has convinced the world of India’s prowess in mathematics. When the media people get some time from the half-naked cosmetic beauty, then talk about the Ramanujan Award awarded to Indian mathematician Neena Gupta. But unfortunately in this country, half-naked, drug addicts and traitors get media coverage. Daughters like Neena Gupta, those who bring laurels to the country, do not get media coverage. Well, today we have social media, and that’s why we will not let this mathematician daughter remain away with respect she deserves. Congratulations #Neena_Gupta, India is proud of you. Hail India

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be Misleading.

With the keyword ‘Professor Neena Gupta’, we found an article published by Times Now on December 21, 2021. According to the title of the article, Neena Gupta is the third woman and fourth Indian to have won the coveted Ramanujan Award.

Searching for Ramanujan Prize, we found that it is awarded to young mathematicians from the developing countries every year since 2005. It further describes: “The Prize is awarded annually to a researcher from a developing country, who is less than 45 years of age on December 31 of the year of the award. Researchers working in any branch of the mathematical sciences are eligible. The Prize carries a $15,000 cash award.”

Also in 2006, another Indian woman Sujatha Ramdorai from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) received the award. According to the website, she received the prize in recognition of her work on the arithmetic of algebraic varieties and her substantial contribution to non-commutative version of the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory.

Thus, we can ascertain that Neena Gupta was awarded Ramanujan Prize in 2021, and she is not the first Indian female recipient of this prestigious award. So, the post is misleading.
