Fact Check: 2012 Image Falsely Linked to Recent Plane Crash in Nepal

Yeti Airlines ATR 72 aircraft, carrying 72 people, crashed into a gorge minutes before landing at the Pokhara airport in Nepal on January 15, 2023.

Following the incident, videos and pictures claiming to be of the recent crash started doing the rounds on social media. Many users shared one of such image with a caption: नेपाल में बड़ा विमान हादसा, यति एयरलाइंस का प्लेन क्रैश, 68 यात्री सवार थे प्लेन में, काठमांडू से पोखरा जा रहा था प्लेन #nepal #nepalplanecrash (English translation: Big plane accident in Nepal, plane crash of Yeti Airlines, 68 passengers were on board, the plane was going from Kathmandu to Pokhara #nepal #nepalplanecrash)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be old.

Putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the same image with a caption “The image is of a Nepal plane crash – photo by Reuters” in an article by IB Times, dated February 17, 2014.

The website of Reuters carries the image that shows the wreckage of a Dornier aircraft, owned by private firm Sita Air, at the crash site in Kathmandu on September 28, 2012.

The description reads: A Nepalese police officer stands in front of the wreckage of a Dornier aircraft, owned by private firm Sita Air, at the crash site in Kathmandu on September 28, 2012. Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the viral image is old.
