Fact Check: 2021 Video of Plane Crash in Russia Falsely Linked to Recent Nepal Tragedy

Date:

A video is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that it shows the last moment of the Yeti Airlines aircraft that crashed near the Pokhara Airport in Nepal on January 15, 2023.

The Facebook post reads: Nepal plane crash last moments

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Putting the keyframes of the video through Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same video on YouTube, dated August 17, 2021 and titled: Military transport plane crash in Russia kills 3.

The same video had been uploaded on Twitter, dated August 17, 2021, with a caption: An Il-112 military transport plane crashed in the Moscow region. There were three people on board.

Many media organisations in August 2021 had reported that a prototype Ilyushin Il-112V military transport aircraft with three people on-board crashed during a test flight in the Moscow region.

According to a report by The Week, the military transport plane crashed in a forest area while coming in for a landing at the Kubinka airfield, about 45 kilometres west of Moscow.  The same incident was also covered by Reuters and India Today.

Hence, it is clear that an old video of a plane crash in Russia is falsely linked to recent Nepal tragedy.
