Fact Check: Viral Video Showing ‘Huge Crack’ Is Quite Old and Not Related to Recent Earthquake in Turkey

The video of a huge crack is being shared on social media claiming that the recent earthquake in Turkey caused a 300 km-long crack.

On February 6, a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitude, followed by some strong aftershocks, struck parts of Turkey and Syria, killing more than 44,000 people. Another 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey on February 20, leaving three dead and more than 200 injured.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through a Reverse Image Search, we found a similar video uploaded on YouTube in November 2022.

According to the video title and description, the video is from In Pinglu County, Yuncheng, Shanxi Province in China. Similar videos were also shared on other channels. The links can be seen here and here.

We also found the ‘crack’ near Pingu County in China through the Google Earth search.

Matching the visuals from the viral video with Google Earth image, we have spotted multiple similarities confirming that it’s the same place.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the video is old and is not from Turkey.
