FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the picture, we spotted a Japanese blog page, dated June 20, 2011. The image in the blog post matches exactly with the viral post and the description informs that the photo shows the damage to the pier of the Joetsu Shinkansen Wanazu Bridge after the Chuetsu earthquake in Japan in 2004.

Searching further about the disaster in Japan, we identified a photo reconnaissance report on the 2004 Niigata-chuetsu earthquakes from the Department of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Here, we found several photographs of the 2004 Japan earthquake along with the viral picture. And the description informs that the image is of the pier of the Joetsu Shinkansen Wanazu Bridge from Japan.

Another report, published by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in January 2005, showcases observations on the Niigata Ken Chuetsu earthquake. One of the images in the report matches the viral picture and corroborates the claim that the picture is from Japan.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture claiming to show a damaged pillar of a bridge in Bangladesh is false.
