Fact Check

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified a tweet, dated February 28, 2023, carrying the same viral video with a caption: “In Samarkand (Uzbekistan), the balloon ricocheted and hit a gas station employee right in the head. The man died on the spot. #explosion #death #Uzbekistan #gasstation.” The timestamp on this CCTV footage reads February 25, 2023.

Searching further, we found the same video uploaded on the verified Twitter handle of a Turkish media outlet, dated March 1, 2023, with a caption: “In Uzbekistan, a car’s LPG tank exploded while filling. An employee died on the spot.”

The detailed article was found on a Turkish news website with the same viral video stating that “The LPG tank of a car exploded while filling gas at a gas station in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The fragment of the LPG tank, which was blown up as a result of the explosion, hit the 42-year-old officer who was trying to escape from the scene.” Check several other media reports here and here

According to an UzNews, cited by the Directorate of Emergency Situations of the Samarkand province, a petrol cylinder explosion in a Nexia-3 automobile in Samarkand claimed the life of a 43-year-old guy. The event happened on February 25, at 11:30 am, while refilling at a CNG filling station in the Bedil street neighbourhood. We also looked through the statement issued by the emergency services division of Samarkand on February 25. The Facebook post advised all drivers to closely adhere to the technical criteria for the usage of petrol cylinders placed in their cars and provided a picture of the damaged automobile.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video showing a car exploding while refuelling is from Uzbekistan, NOT India.
