A video showing a massive crowd dancing to a loud DJ is widely shared on social media, claiming that it is a ‘historic’ turnout for a recent Ram Navami procession in Purnia, Bihar.
The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “बिहार के पूर्णियां ने रचा इतिहास !! रामनवमी शोभायात्रा में पूर्णियां की सड़कों पर उतरे 3 लाख लोग !! मुस्लिम बहुल सीमांचल इलाके का एक जिला है पूर्णियां” (English translation: Purnia of Bihar created history!! 3 lakh people descended on the streets for the Ram Navami procession!! FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
Performing a Reverse Image Search, we spotted a Facebook page carrying the same viral video, dated April 17, 2022, with a caption: “Odisha.” This clearly means that the video is not recent.
Searching further, we found the longer version of the same video uploaded on another Facebook page, dated April 11, 2022, with a caption: “आपदामप हर्तारम दातारं सर्व सम्पदाम, लोकाभिरामं श्री रामं भूयो भूयो नामाम्यहम। श्री रामाय रामभद्राय रामचन्द्राय वेधसे, रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीताया पतये नमः।। #nacdhamanagar #Bhadrak #Odisha #RamNavami #Sanskrit #news.” This video also claims that it is from Odisha.
In the longer version of the video, there are billboards with the names of various businesses, including “Gujarath Sales”, “Bharath Fashion”, “Pearl”, and “IDBI Bank”. And Bharath Fashion is a shop in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka.
Also, through the Google Street View, a setting of the IDBI Bank Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, resembles the one in the extended version of the viral video.
Multiple videos have been uploaded on YouTube in 2021, claiming that it is the Datta Jayanti celebration in Chikkamagaluru. A Twitter handle had also carried the same viral video, dated December 12, 2019, with a caption: “These type of grand celebrations of Datta Jayanti in Chikkamagaluru is possible only during the BJP govt.”
Thus, it is confirmed that the viral video dates back to at least 2019 and is not related to the recent Ram Navami procession in Bihar’s Purnia.
