It’s Been 3 Months, We Haven’t Got Justice: Top Wrestlers Resume Protest Against WFI Chief

Date:

New Delhi: Top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik who led the protest earlier this year against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh, are back at Jantar Mantar on Sunday.

The wrestlers during the sit-in protest said that seven women wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment complaint against the WFI chief at the Connaught Palace Police Station.

Taking note of the issue, the Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal took to Twitter and added “Several women wrestlers of the country had given a complaint of sexual harassment against the WFI chief at Connaught Place Police Station two days ago.”

The tweet further added “One of the complainants is also a minor. Till now the Delhi Police has not registered an FIR in the matter. This is against the law. Have issued a notice to the police in this matter. Asking to respond to the DCW within 48 hours.”

Wrestler Bajrang Punia while speaking with the media said that “We have been going through mental torture, it’s about the respect of women athletes…We aren’t receiving any response from Sports Ministry, it’s been 3 months”.

Vinesh Phogat said that “it’s been 3 months, and we haven’t got justice, that’s why we are protesting again. We demand justice, FIR has not been registered yet. We are grateful that DCW is supporting us.”

Earlier in January, after the wrestler’s protest, the Sports Ministry constituted a committee to probe into the allegations levelled against the WFI chief. The committee was headed by Mary Kom.

The probe panel submitted its report earlier this month but the findings are yet to be made public.
