Fact Check: Unrelated Post Falsely Shared As Lawyer Saurabh Kirpal Dancing To A Bollywood Song

Date:

As the Supreme Court is hearing petitions in which individuals are asking for the legal recognition of same-sex marriages, a video showing a person dancing to a Bollywood song is widely shared on social media. It is claimed that the person is a lawyer and LGBTQIA+ activist Saurabh Kirpal, son of former Chief Justice of India Bhupinder Nath Kirpal and a senior advocate.

The caption of the post mocks Saurabh Kirpal and reads: “*ये हैं सौरव कृपाल* *SC के भावी न्यायाधीश* *इनके पिता बी.एन. कृपाल* *2002 में SC के मुख्य न्यायाधीश थे* *इसलिए परिवारवाद परम्परा के तहत* *चीफ जस्टिस चंद्रचूड़ के लिए* *समलैंगिक विवाह को मान्यता* *अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है*” (English translation: This is Sourav Kripal future SC judge *His father B.N. Kripal* Was the Chief Justice of SC in 2002. *Hence under familyism tradition* For Chief Justice Chandrachud recognition of gay marriage *is crucial*)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified an Instagram page ‘damandiaries’ carrying the same viral video on January 8, 2022, with a caption: “Finally dancing to one of my most favourite track of the season.”

According to the account’s bio, his full name is Damandeep Singh Chaudhary and he’s the founder of a fashion company called Runway Lifestyle.

We checked the company’s website and found his name and designation there.

As the video went viral on social media, Saurabh Kirpal took to Twitter and clarified that “There’s a video of a man dancing, allegedly me, that’s gone viral. a) it’s not me, b) mocking anyone this way is disgusting homophobia. Bigots may cloak their hatred behind justifications, but it remains vile. Shame on them.” Kirpal, who identifies himself as gay, was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as a Delhi High Court judge. However, the Centre expressed concerns over his sexual orientation, which the collegium disagreed with.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an unrelated video is falsely shared as lawyer Saurabh Kirpal dancing to a Bollywood song.
