Fact Check: Old Video Falsely Shared As Protests In London After Pak Former PM Imran Khan’s Arrest

Date:

Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, was granted a significant relief on May 11 when the country’s Supreme Court declared his arrest “unlawful” and ordered his immediate release. The court made this decision after he was brought before a bench on their orders. Khan was arrested by Rangers outside the Islamabad High Court in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust Case, which led to violence in several regions of the country.

Against this backdrop, a video showing a massive crowd gathered on the streets is widely shared on social media, claiming that they are supporters of Imran Khan in front of former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s house in London, UK.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Unrest over Imran Khan’s arrest has gone GLOBAL. Take a look at the scene in London, where hundreds gathered to show their support for Khan & protested in front of former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s house”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified a tweet, dated November 1, 2022, carrying the same viral video with a caption: “The biggest asset of Imran Khan’s extraordinary popularity and support today are young people and women and Pakistanis abroad is a witness.” This clearly means that the video is not recent.

A news report by The Tribune  dated April 17, 2022, that embedded a tweet carries visuals similar to the viral video. According to the report, “a large number of people also gathered in London’s Hyde Park to show support for former premier Imran, who was ousted on April 9 in a parliamentary no-confidence vote.”

Another news report by The Sun, dated April 22, 2023, includes visuals that resembled those seen in the viral video, and it stated that such demonstrations typically take place outside Avenfield House, where Sharif lives with his family.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is falsely shared as protests in London after former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest.
