Fact Check: Viral Post Showing Snipers On Rooftops In France Amidst Ongoing Protests Is Misleading

Date:

A video claiming Snipers have been spotted on the rooftops in France is extensively shared on social media. People fear that a civil war has begun in the country. This comes on the back of the recent killing of a teenager of Algerian heritage at a traffic stop in Paris.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: Snipers spotted on French rooftops. This is literally a civil war now in France. #FranceRiots

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team identified a tweet on an unverified profile, with a caption: Sniper de la cite (English: Sniper of the city), dated March 14, 2022

A part of the video in the tweet matches with the viral clip, indicating that it has been online for more than a year now.

Our team also found multiple videos from different dates on Twitter. Posts from May 2023 and March 2023 were visible with sarcastic captions, and nothing related to the ongoing riots in France.

Although we could not verify the original source of the video, given that it has been online since March 2022, confirms that the video cannot be related to the ongoing protests in France. Therefore, the viral post is misleading.
