New Delhi: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said on Monday that the ministry intends to approach the GST Council, seeking a review of the decision to impose a 28% tax on the funds collected by online gaming companies from their customers.
During an interview with CNN-News18, Chandrasekhar said, “We will go back to the GST Council and may request their consideration on the facts of the new regulatory framework.”
The minister highlighted that the GST Council is a federal organisation representing all state governments. He expressed that the GST framework is the result of the joint efforts of the Central government and state governments coming together.
Earlier, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the GST Council has made a decision to levy a 28% tax on the entire turnover of online gaming, horse racing, and casinos, based on their full face value.
The decision was announced after the 50th meeting of the GST Council held on July 11 in New Delhi.
