Fact Check: Viral Video Of Girl Talking About House Demolition Is NOT Related To Nuh Violence

Date:

On August 7, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered a stay on the ongoing demolition efforts in the Nuh district of Haryana. These actions were initiated after recent communal conflicts in the region. The court raised concern over whether this endeavour amounted to an “exercise of ethnic cleansing.”

Against this backdrop, a video of a girl talking about the demolition of her house is widely shared on social media. Speaking to a reporter, the girl says that her future has been shattered, as her books have been buried under the debris.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “’Future bhi toot gaya’ A poor Muslim girl from Nuh, Haryana, talking about her pain after the house was demolished by authorities”.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, our NM team identified the verified YouTube handle of The Lallantop carrying the extended version of the viral video on June 19, 2023. According to the video description, a demolition operation was carried out in the Priyanka Gandhi camp near Vasant Kunj, resulting in the demolition of many makeshift homes and displacing more than 500 residents who had been living there for nearly 10 years. Following the demolition conducted by the Delhi Urban Slum Improvement Board (DUSIB), the land was subsequently designated for use by the National Disaster Response Force.

In the YouTube video, the reporter engaged with other affected residents, who shared their accounts of the distressing situation. Approximately one minute into the video, the reporter specified that the camp was situated in Vasant Vihar, which is roughly four kilometres away from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

According to an Indian Express report, dated June 17, the demolition carried out by the DUSIB occurred two weeks after the Delhi High Court declined to halt the operation. The report indicated that as bulldozers entered the area on the morning of June 16, residents along with members of the CPI (ML), the All India Central Council of Trade Unions, and the All India Students Association were observed participating in protests.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video of a girl talking about house demolition is falsely linked to Nuh violence.
