Date:

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Central Morocco late on Friday, Killing over 600 people, injuring over 300, and damaging buildings in the historic city of Marrakech. A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: “See how much destruction has been caused by the earthquake in Morocco. Disturbing Drone footage.”

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, our team found the same video on Reedit, a public discussion platform, with a title: “Drone footage of Hatay city in Turkey.” It clearly suggests that the viral video is not from the recent earthquake.

With an open keyword search, we came across the same drone footage on Dailymotion.com, uploaded seven month ago,  with a caption: “A video clip filmed by a drone documented the extent of the massive destruction that afflicted the Turkish city of Antakya, near the Syrian border, as a result of the devastating earthquake.” As per the report, in February 2023, around 50,783 killed, and 107,204 injured across 11 of the 17 affected provinces of Turkey due to earthquake.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral aerial footage is old and related to Turkey. It has nothing to do with the recent Morocco earthquake.
