Fact Check: Viral Post’s Claim About Andhra Pradesh Healthcare Facilities Is Misleading

Date:

A picture showing some women sitting in a hospital with drips attached to their hands is doing the rounds on social media. Users claim that the picture is from Kothavalasa Government Hospital in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. The state health department has been criticised for providing poor healthcare facilities.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption:
(English translation: Health department in Andhra Pradesh is sick. Here you can see that mobile phones that are charged are not the mobile phones but their whole lives. Picture taken in Kothavalasa Government Hospital in Vijayanagaram district…. This government doesn’t want the lives of Giriputhri but wants their votes ?? Does AP have a minister for health department)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral image, the NM team traced an article in The Hindu, dated September 5, 2018 and titled: 14 tribal school students admitted to hospital. The image in the article matches with the viral picture and the article informs that 14 students of the Kothavalasa Ashram School were admitted to the Saluru Community Hospital in Vizianagaram district with symptoms of drug allergy and high fever.

A similar news report was also published in the India Herald.

Searching further, we identifies a tweet on the official handle of Roja Selvamani — a leader of the Opposition party, on September 4, 2018, published in 2018. Many other leaders, too, criticised the then-government of N. Chandrababu Naidu for the condition of the healthcare system of the state.

Given that the picture has been online since 2018, it cannot be linked to the current government of Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party, which came to power in 2019. Therefore, it’s confirmed that the viral picture, claiming to show the condition of the healthcare system of Andhra under the current government, is misleading.
