Date:

Madhya Pradesh is all set to witness the Assembly Elections at the end of this year. Also, the upcoming assembly elections in Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana kick off in December 2023 and continue into 2024 as per the current schedule. These state elections will be pivotal in flagging the public mood in the months ahead of general elections in 2024.

Meanwhile, the video of a crowd beating a man is going viral on social media, claiming that people thrashed BJP MLA in Madhya Pradesh for asking votes based on religion. The caption in the video reads: “The people of Madhya Pradesh thrashed the BJP MLAs and supporters who had gone to seek votes in the name of religion. The people of India are awake now. The public is angry over inflation, unemployment, corruption, and rape of women, and has started teaching a lesson to the BJP.”

[English translation: This was bound to happen, but I had asked you to leave the meeting, not to thrash me if you were asked for votes in the name of religion. Then I am saying that if you follow the rules then you will be benefited, today MLA’s number has been called and tomorrow yours, too, is sure to be called. The rest is your choice. Hail Siya Ram!]

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, our team found a video report on the YouTube channel of OneIndia Hindi, dated March 12, 2022, carrying similar footage. According to the report, BJD MLA from Chilika, Prashant Jagdev, was assaulted after he allegedly rammed his car into a crowd in Odisha’s Khurda district. At least 22 people, including seven police personnel, were injured in the incident, police officials said. As per preliminary information, a huge crowd, including BJP supporters, had gathered outside the Banapur Block Development Office (BDO) for the block chairperson election when the incident occurred.

Several media outlets like Live Hindustan, and  Kalinga TV also reported the same.

According to The Hindustan Times report, dated March 12, 2022, the incident took place in Odisha when the suspended BJD leader, Prashant Jagdev, allegedly ploughed his car into a crowd of BJP workers injuring many people, including policewoman on duty. The MLA had been suspended from BJD in September last year after a video of him slapping a Dalit BJP leader went viral.

At least 200 BJP workers assembled at the Banapur panchayat samiti’s office for the election of a new chairperson. Jagdev reached the office to check on the election activity. When BJP workers tried to stop him from entering the premises as the elections were about to begin, Jagdev ran the SUV over the police inspector an old man and a woman. The injured include 15 BJP workers, a worker of the BJD and seven police officials.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video is old and not related to Madhya Pradesh or Bhartiya Janata Party.
