US Embassy Dismisses Report Claiming Canada Row May Hit India-US Ties

Date:

New Delhi: In response to a report from the Washington-based publication Politico, which suggested that US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti had expressed concerns about the potential deterioration of India-US relations due to ongoing tensions between Canada and India, the United States has firmly refuted any claims of a diplomatic strain between New Delhi and Washington, DC.

Speaking of the report claiming that the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, cautioned about India-US ties getting worse, US Embassy Spokesperson says, “The US Embassy dismisses these reports. Ambassador Garcetti is working hard every day to deepen the partnership between the people and governments of the United States and India. As his personal engagement and public schedule demonstrates, Ambassador Garcetti and the US Mission to India are working every day to advance the important, strategic, and consequential partnership we have with India.”

Earlier, a report surfaced quoting an official who stated that US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, had suggested that India-US ties “could get worse for a time.” The report also mentioned that Garcetti had told the US that it “may need to reduce its contacts with Indian officials for an undefined period of time.”

Speaking on India-Canada Row, Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson, US Department of State, said in a statement, “We continue to be deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau and we remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners and it is critical that Canada’s investigation proceeds and perpetrators be brought to justice, we also have publicly and privately urged the Indian govt to cooperate in the Canadian investigation.”

Diplomatic tension between India and Canada escalated when the Canadian Prime Minister claimed that Canada’s national security officials had reason to believe that “agents of the Indian government” were responsible for the killing of Nijjar. India promptly rejected these claims, denouncing them as “absurd and politically motivated.
