Gwalior And Kozhikode Make It To UNESCO’s New Creative Cities Network

New Delhi: Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and Kozhikode in Kerala recently secured positions in the latest additions to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The list recognizes cities for their efforts in promoting culture and creativity, aligning with strategies for human-centered development and urbanization.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization shared the announcement on their website, coinciding with World Cities Day.

UNESCO introduced 55 new additions to the Creative Cities Network, featuring Gwalior and Kozhikode from India. Gwalior earned its place in the Music category, and Kozhikode was acknowledged in the Literature category.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated the people of Kozhikode and Gwalior for earning UNESCO designations in the categories of literature and music, respectively.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister said, “India’s cultural vibrancy shines brighter on the global stage with Kozhikode’s rich literary legacy and Gwalior’s melodious heritage now joining the esteemed UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Congratulations to the people of Kozhikode and Gwalior on this remarkable achievement!”

“As we celebrate this international recognition, our nation reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting our diverse cultural traditions. These accolades also reflect the collective efforts of every individual dedicated to nurturing and sharing our unique cultural narratives,” he added.

The Creative Cities Network spans seven categories: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music. With these latest incorporations, the Creative Cities Network now comprises a total of 350 cities representing over a hundred countries.
