New Delhi: Delhi Police questioned a 19-year-old from Bihar in connection with a deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna, which circulated widely on social media. Officials suspect the youth initially posted the video on his social media account and later shared it across various platforms.
The youth from Bihar was served a notice to join the probe as the deepfake video originated from his social media account, as stated by a senior officer.
An FIR was filed on November 10, under sections 465 (punishment for forgery) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act. The case was registered at the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.
“He claimed he got the video from an Instagram account, but we’re still investigating,” the officer said.
The youth, originally from Bihar, was summoned to the IFSO Unit and instructed to bring the mobile phone he mentioned was used to upload the video, according to the officer. Following the FIR, the IFSO Unit reached out to Meta to obtain the URL and other details for identifying the accused.
Recently, Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif also fell victim to Deepfake technology when a manipulated version of her towel fight scene from the film Tiger 3 circulated widely on social media. In the original trailer scene, Katrina Kaif engages in a fight, wrapped in a towel, with her nemesis.
