A video depicting a lathi charge and the police intimidating a woman has gone viral on social media, claiming that the incidents of violence against women have increased since the BJP government came to power in Chhattisgarh.
(English translation: As long as Bhupesh was there in Chhattisgarh, tech was trusted… Today Bhupesh is not there, it’s Adani government and the woman is being beaten. #save_hasdev_forest)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.
Conducting a Reverse Image Search on Google, the NM team traced a video similar to the viral one on the official YouTube channel — News 18 Kannada, dated December 5, 2023. As per the video description, it’s scenes from the funeral of Arjun — an elephant in Hassan district. The police resorted to lathi-charge to control the unruly mob. At 4.29 minutes, both women seen in News 18 Kannada clip and the viral video are same.
Many other YouTube channels have also carried the funeral of ‘elephant Arjun’ with the same women.
As per the The Hindu website report, dated December 5, 2023, following the death of Arjun, residents approached the forest department, alleging official negligence. They also demanded that the last rites be conducted in Mysore, where Arjun used to participate in the Dussehra festival.
According to a report by the News 24 website, dated December 5, 2023, forest officer SP Mahadev stated that a wild elephant from Chikkamagaluru district had entered Bengaluru. The forest department initiated a campaign to capture this wild elephant, and Arjun died during the operation. A confrontation occurred between the wild elephant and Arjun, during which the wild elephant pierced its tusks into Arjun’s stomach, leading to his death due to excessive bleeding.
Thus, we can conclusively say that the viral video is from Karnataka, NOT Chhattisgarh.
