FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the image, the NM team identified a tweet by Priyanka Chaturvedi (MP), dated March 8, 2024, with a caption: “Yes, absolutely incorrect interpretation of what he said. Here’s the video where he says making your son the CM is not like making a gully cricket playing son the top man at BCCI, Amit Shah, for even if I want my son to be CM he will have to win the mandate of the people unlike using clout to make Jay Shah BCCI chief. @news24tvchannel has a bureau here, they could have easily verified the story. But then..” It clarifies that the statement made by the former Maharashtra CM has been misinterpreted.
Searching further, we found another report by Times Now, dated March 08, 2024, with a headline: “Lok Sabha Elections Not Like BCCI…: Uddhav Thackeray’s Dig At Amit Shah Over ‘Parivarvaad’ Allegations.”
According to the report, during a public meeting, Uddhav Thackeray made a comparison, suggesting that appointing the chief minister is not like filling positions in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This was seen as a subtle reference to Jay Shah, son of Amit Shah, being appointed as the BCCI secretary. Thackeray stressed that for Aaditya to become the chief minister, it would require the support and will of the people. The report also quoted Uddhav Thackeray “Ok, I want to make Aaditya CM, but that can happen only if you all want him to be CM. Firstly, making him CM is not like the BCCI, how Amit Shah made his son Jay Shah the BCCI secretary.”
We also found a similar report by Mumbai Tak, dated March 7. In that report, Thackeray criticises Amit Shah, saying that the chief minister post in Maharashtra isn’t like a position in the BCCI, where you can appoint your son using your influence. He expresses his wish for his son, Aaditya, to become CM, but emphasises that it can only happen if the people support him.
Hence, we can conclusively say that the viral statement is edited and shared with misleading context.
