Fact Check: Rohingya Muslims Using Artificial Fingers To Cast Votes In 2024 Lok Sabha Elections? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that Rohingya Muslims in West Bengal are using artificial fingers to cast their votes in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Many social media users claim they use these artificial fingers to vote multiple times.

A Facebook user posted  (archived link) the viral post with the following caption:  पश्चिम बंगाल में अवैध बांग्लादेशी और रोहिंग्याओं के नाम वोटर लिस्ट में जोड़ने के बाद भी फर्जी वोटिंग का जुगाड़ तो देखिये।। उंगली में लगी सियाही को छुपाने के लिए नकली उँगली पहनकर दुबारा-तिबारा वोट देते हैं! (English translation: Even after adding the names of illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas in West Bengal to the voter list, see the argument of fake voting. To hide the ink in the finger, they vote again and again by wearing fake finger!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be fake.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, our team found a news article in ABC News, dated June 6, 2013. According to the report, the viral picture is from Japan. A Japanese doctor, named Yukako Fukushima, makes artificial fingers for people who have lost their fingers in an accident or due to some reason. Yukako Fukushima had also made such a fake finger for a member of Japan’s criminal gang Yazuka.

Certain frames of the video in the article match with the viral image, indicating that the latter might not have any relation with the Indian elections.

Searching further, we came across a video from the official channel of AFP News Agency, dated June 2, 2013. The video explains the whole intent and principle behind the business and how Fukushima is changing the lives of all former Yakuza bosses by giving them these prosthetic fingers.

The Indian media organisations, like NDTV, Latestly, and The Times of India, too, debunked the viral image, clarifying that it has nothing to do with the ongoing elections.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Rohingya Muslims in West Bengal are using artificial fingers to cast multiple votes in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, is false.
