Mukherjee Nagar video goes viral, police claim it is fake

Date:

New Delhi: A video has been going viral on social media in which a policeman can be seen asking students in Mukherjee Nagar area to leave the city by December 24 and return on January 2, as the law and order situation in the national capital is sensitive amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

In the video, the police officer said: “We will close all PGs, restaurants, library and coaching classes on December 24. Book your tickets and return to your homes. Come back on January 2, take it as winter break. The law and order situation is not good. We are shutting down everything. No one will create any nuisance. Do you understand Section 144? A public nuisance case will be filed, understand?”

“Why do you want to ruin your career? If you don’t want cases against you, then forget classes and go home,” he added.

However, the Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed that the video is fake and said that “fake messages” of police shutting down coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar were circulating on social media. It also said that a case has been filed in the matter.

“Fake messages are circulating in social media on closure of PGs/Hostels in Mukherjee Nagar area. We have registered a case against these fake messages. Appeal to all citizens to not believe these rumours. @DelhiPolice,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, northwest Delhi tweeted on Wednesday.

At the filing of the report, NewsMobile can not independently verify the veracity of these claims. Mukherjee Nagar is home to thousands of students renting apartments or sharing paying guest accommodations.

Delhi has been witnessing protests against the newly-enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since it was passed in Parliament earlier this month.

The amended citizenship law grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists, and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
