Fact Check: Old picture of stranded people in Malaysia re-shared as India during the lockdown

Date:

A picture of some people stranded at a place is being shared online with a claim that they are ‘poor Hindus’ who are stranded due to the lockdown.

“These Helpless People are not Tablighis ,They are Poor Hindus Who are Stranded due to Lockdown .Has any TV Chanel discussed This, ” the text on the post read.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be false.

We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found a link to an article dated December 2019, featuring the same image.

According to the article, this picture is from Malaysia. These people were waiting at the immigration office, courtesy of the Back For Good (B4G) programme stared on August 5, 2019.

As per an article in The Star, the B4G programme implemented in Peninsular Malaysia until Dec 31 is aimed at giving illegal immigrants who have committed offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 the chance to return to their countries of origin.

The above information proves that the picture is old and is NOT from India and related to COVID-19
