US House Convenes To Impeach Trump For His Role In Capitol Violence

Date:

A week after US President Donald Trump’s supporters caused violence in US Capitol, the House of Representatives on Wednesday gathered to impeach Trump for his role in the incident.

Notably, at least five Republicans have said they would support the Democrats’ move to impeach Trump for the second time. This comes just seven days before he is scheduled to leave office.

Washington is on high alert ever since the riot took place at the US Capitol.

The House convened around 9 AM (1400 GMT) in the same chamber where rioters stormed last Wednesday. Democrats moved an impeachment vote after Vice President Mike Pence rejected their effort to persuade him to invoke the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to remove Trump.

“I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution,” Pence said in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday.

Despite the letter, the House passed a resolution late Tuesday formally calling on Vice President Pence to impeach trump. The final vote was 223-205.
