Fact Check: This Picture Of Melting Glacier Is NOT From Uttarakhand; Here’s The Truth

Date:

On February 7, 2021, a glacier burst triggered massive flooding in rivers downstream in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

Following the incident, multiple pictures and videos claiming to be from Uttarakhand started making rounds on social media. One such picture was shared with the caption: Pray For Uttarakhand.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the picture is not from India.

We cropped the picture and ran a Reverse Image Search. The search led us to a blog by the US Department of Agriculture from 2017 featuring the same image.

The caption of the picture read: The massive Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest is rapidly retreating. In this photo a developing forest can be seen above the glacier illustrating how the Mendenhall landscape is being dramatically altered by climate change. We also found an article by High Country News from 2016, featuring the same image.

We also found the same image on the website of the National Science Foundation, in an article from 2010.

NewsMobile debunked a similar video earlier, where a video from Nepal was being shared as that of Uttarakhand.

https://newsmobile.in/articles/2021/02/09/fact-check-video-of-avalanche-from-nepal-shared-as-recent-uttarakhand-glacier-burst/

From the above information, it is clear that the picture is an old one from Alaska and NOT from India.

Hence, the post in circulation is misleading.
