Fact Check: PM Modi’s 2019 Kolkata Rally Video Viral As Recent Footage From Mangalore

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mangalore on September 2, 2022, to lay foundation stone for eight projects to the tune of Rs 3800 crore. He arrived at the Goldfinch City grounds at Bangra Kuluru, Mangalore, for the event and later addressed a gathering of almost 1 Lakh people at the venue. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot and other ministers of union and state governments accompanied him at the event.

Against this backdrop, a viral video of a crowd chanting ‘Modi, Modi….’ while he takes the stage is doing rounds online. Many users are sharing the video claiming it to be from Modi’s recent address in Mangalore.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption: PM Narendra Modi at the Mangaluru public rally!

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found the claims to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes led us to multiple tweets from April 2019 by BJP party members on their personal handles. All the tweets indicated that the video is about Modi’s rally in Kolkata in 2019. Priti Gandhi and Amit Malviya from the BJP tweeted this video on April 3, 2019, appreciating the support that PM Modi received from the crowd in Kolkata.

Moving on, we found a similar video tweeted on April 3, 2019, by the official handle of the Bhartiya Janata Party

The same video was tweeted on April 3, 2019, on the official Twitter handle of the Prime Minister as well.

The keyframes on all the videos match exactly with that of the viral video indicating that the video is indeed from the April 2019 rally of PM Modi in Kolkata. A comparison frame of the viral video and the tweet by PM Modi can be seen below:

Finally, we found a YouTube live stream from April 3, 2019. The video titled: ‘PM Shri Narendra Modi addresses public meeting in Kolkata, West Bengal : 03.04.2019’, published on the official YouTube channel of the Bhartiya Janata Party, shows the entire 44-minute address by Modi. At 3:36, we can see Modi entering the stage and waving at the crowd, while the crowd is chanting his name all along.

Therefore, based on our investigation, we can conclusively say that the viral video showing PM Narendra Modi being greeted by the crowd chanting his name in Mangalore, is misleading.
