Fact Check: Rohit Sharma Has NOT Announced His Retirement After India’s Defeat In T20 World Cup

Date:

After India suffered a 10-wicket loss against England in the T20 World Cup 2022’s semi-final, a video started making rounds on social media claiming that captain of the Indian team Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement.

The video of a press conference was shared with a caption: रोहित शर्मा ने सेमीफाइनल में हार के बाद क्रिकेट से संन्यास की घोषणा की (English translation: Rohit Sharma announces retirement from cricket after defeat in semi-final.)

Here’s the link to the post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Firstly, we did find any such announcements in the video. However, in the beginning, a lady can be heard saying that it’s a ‘Pre-Match Press Conference’. We also noticed the logo of Beanyman News on the top right corner of the video.

We also found the longer version of a press conference uploaded on the YouTube channel of Beanyman News, dated November 9, 2022, with a title: Rohit Sharma (India) Semi-final Pre-match Press Conference | India v England | T20 World Cup 2022.

Thus, it is clear that the video was taken before the match.

No such official announcement has been made so far. We found multiple media reports speculating if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would take retirement from the T20 format, but none of them has mentioned that Rohit has announced his retirement.

According to a report, when asked about senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s future in T20 cricket, coach Rahul Dravid said: “It’s too early to talk about it, just after a semi-final game… These guys have been terrific performers for us. We’ve got a couple of years to reflect on it. These are some really quality players here. Not the right time to talk about or think about this stuff now. We’ll have enough time, enough matches as we go on ahead and try to prepare for the next World Cup.”

Thus, it is clear that the viral claim is false as no such announcement has been made at the time of writing this article.
