Fact Check: Unrelated Video Falsely Shared As Funeral Procession Of Algerian Descent In France

Date:

Violent protests erupted in France after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nahel of Algerian descent at a traffic stop in Paris. Against this backdrop, a video is widely shared on social media, claiming that it is the funeral procession of Nahel. The video shows a large gathering of motorcycles participating in the procession.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: The funeral procession of the Algerian child Nahel, RIP

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search, we found an Instagram post, dated April 28, 2023, with a caption 4 and deja (English translation: 4 years already #TBT) and the content on the video shows hashtag #kingzempache written at the bottom. The video matches exactly with the viral clip and thus indicates that the latter is not recent.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search, we spotted a news article, titled: Des milliers de personnes dans les rues pour dire un dernier adieu à Dimitri “Zempache” Zami (English translation: Thousands of people in the streets to say a last goodbye to Dimitri “Zempache” Zami) published on April 9, 2019, on Guadeloupe La 1ère the media wing of France TV in the Guadeloupe territory of France.

The picture in the article shows a similar group of two-wheelers passing through the road, and the article informs that many bikers accompanied the funeral procession of a man named Dimitri “Zempache” Zami, who was killed on March 31, 2019, at his home.

We found a YouTube video from April 10, 2019, on an unverified handle showing the same rally from a different angle.

Finally, we checked for the funeral of Nahel and landed on a recent YouTube video published on the official channel of Associated Press. It is clear that the video has no relation whatsoever with the viral clip as the funeral was very different from what is being shared online.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show visuals from the funeral of Nahel in France, is false.
