Curfew in Srinagar

Date:

Srinagar: On Muharram, a complete shutdown is being observed in several parts of the Kashmir Valley. Security personnel are manning the streets in Srinagar and shops and businesses have been shut down.

Since 1989, Muharram processions have been banned in Srinagar after a pro-independence revolt started in Kashmir. Only small mourning rallies and processions are allowed in selected areas with limited Shi’ite populations. Every year, Muslims mourn the tragedy of Karbala during the holy month of Muharram.

Meanwhile, in view of the death of two persons in firing by the Army, restricted curfew has been imposed in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Both the victims hail from Budgam and hence the security forces are making sure that no untoward incident takes place in the region. Security has been beefed up in Srinagar in wake of Muharram.

The Army and Defence Minister had on Monday expressed regret in the killing of the two civilians. An FIR has been filed in the case and Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the matter. “The Budgam incident in the Kashmir Valley is highly regrettable. A fair inquiry will be held and action taken against those found guilty,” Defence Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted.

Two civilians were killed and an equal number injured when Army personnel fired at a Maruti 800 car when it did not stop at a check post on repeated call.
