Vivek Srivastava is new SPG chief

Date:

New Delhi: Gujarat cadre IPS officer Vivek Srivastava has been appointed the new Special Protection Group (SPG) chief.

Srivastava, a 1989 batch officer and originally from Bihar is currently on central deputation and is posted in Patna as joint director IB. He was sent to deputation in March 2011.

“Vivek Srivastava has been selected for the head of SPG,” a top official is quoted as saying by a popular daily. “He has been chosen because he has good experience of central IB and is professionally very competent officer and more importantly, the PM wanted only a Gujarat cadre officer as the SPG chief for strategic reasons,” the official added.

Meanhwile, the outgoing SPG chief K Durga Prasad met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday.

It may be noted that the Modi government had unceremoniously removed SPG chief Durga Prasad while he was with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Nepal to attend the Saarc summit.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet had directed that the charge of SPG director may be looked after by the next senior-most officer till the appointment of a suitable successor. Prasad’ tenure had already ended on November 2nd and was on extension till his mysterious removal.

Prasad, a senior IPS officer, was appointed as chief of the elite SPG in November 2011 and his tenure came to an end on November 2.
