National issues hijacked Pre-election presidential Debate, main fight is between United Left and ABVP: JNUSU Election

Date:

If the presidential debate is to be considered as a parameter, this time it is fight between United Left (AISA and SFI) and ABVP in  Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, which is going to be held on 9 September 2016. Though, in pre-election presidential debate BAPSA’s (Birsa-Ambedkar-Phule Student Association) candidate Punaram Rahul Sonpimple spoke well but according to many students the main fight is between United left and ABVP.
Before the pre-election presidential debate whole JNU was turned into a political battlefield, where all the student political parties were playing blame and allegations game. The pre-election presidential debate started at 9:30 pm on Wednesday, with a huge gathering of students at historical Jhelum Lawn.
The presidential debate started with Punaram Rahul Sonpimpl’s speech, he attacked RSS from very first word of his speech. Rather than taking basic student issues, which were mentioned somewhere in he end, his speech was occupied by various national issues. While attacking left unity in his 13 minutes  speech he said “Ye (Left Unity) kehte hai BAPSA ko vote mat karo varna Abvp ajyga, ye gabbar ajyga gabbar ajyga.. kab tak chalega.. isbar Kabali ayga .. kabali”. He further said that “ye (Left Unity) laal chehre me chupe laalchi log hai”.
Same gap was seen as Left Unity’s Presidential candidate, Mohit Pandey started his speech to students by attacking RSS and ABVP but failed to mention basic campus issues. Around At 11:30 pm Jhelum lawn was completely packed with students, when ABVP’s presidential candidate Janhawi was addressing. In her energetic and smart speech, she attacked AISA over the issue of rape in JNU by an AISA activist, she said “Naxaliyo ne sirf ullu banaya hai  .. ye ghathabandhan Gunaho ko chupane ka gathbandhan hai.. “. She went on, “on 9 September will give reply to 9 Febraury.” She was the only presidential candidate who briefly mentioned the basic students issues. Better infrastructure on campus, effective placement cell, an increment in MCM, UGC net and ICCSR fellowship and digital JNU were some of her main points in her election agenda.
Some issues, far away from students life and needs which hijacked the presidential debate were Kashmir, Una and Reliance’s new Jio plan.
