Delhi-NCR Commuters suffer as Ola-Uber drivers go on Strike, major protest on Monday

Date:

If you found it tough to commute from the online app based cab services like UBER and OLA on Friday, the coming week is going to be even tougher. Around 300 plus cab drivers of both the web services went on a strike at Jantar Mantar on Friday demanding their fare should be increased from the existing Rs 6 per km, else there will be a bigger protest on Monday and the rest of the week.

Protesters also complained that after purchasing their own cabs and employing drivers, the firms were giving preference to their own cars than to those owned by others. The drivers’ various demands, included non-lowering of rates, life insurance for drivers and non-preference for taxis owned by the firms.

Some incidents were reported where the protesting cab drivers forced the commuters out of their booked cabs. Passengers also alleged that police were not present at these protest spots to check law and order.

Friday’s protest led to a shortage of cabs in the city due to which the Cab services enforced surge pricing for every ride. Surge pricing was as high as 12 times the normal price.
