High on population low on rape: Mulayam

Date:

New Delhi: There seems no end to the problems of UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. After a series of murders and rapes in the state – which garnered international headlines – Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has stirred yet another controversy with his comments on the law and order situation in the state.

“There are 21 crore people in Uttar Pradesh, yet lowest number of rapes,” he told reporters who were questioning him about the outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a 32-year-old and the increase in number of crime against women in the state.

In April this year, Samajwadi Party chief had sparked outrage with his comments like “boys are boys, they make mistakes.”

Slamming Yadav for his remarks, Congress leader Rashid Alvi said “for any state government, even one such case should be shameful.” His party colleague Shobha Oza added such “insensitive statements” encourage criminals.

National Commission for Women member Shamina Shafiq had a word of advice for Yadav, “I think leaders of Uttar Pradesh don’t have to do much. They just have to read newspapers and they will know that every day at least two to three cases are reported in the state.”
