Long lost Titanic letters resurface after 102 years

Date:

London: One of the last letters written aboard the Titanic has resurfaced 102 years after the doomed ship met with its tragic end. The letter was penned by mother and daughter Esther and Eva Hart on Sunday, April 14 1912 – just hours before the liner sank and recalls a “wonderful journey”. The letter was found in the pocket of husband Benjamin’s sheepskin coat which he gave to his wife to keep warm before he went down with the ship.

Another lost letter from the Titanic that turned up decades later was written by ship’s doctor John Edward Simpson. The letter on headed Titanic paper, was written to his mother in Belfast, posted from the ship’s last port of call in Cobh, on the southern coast of Ireland, before it set out across the Atlantic. In it he reveals how he arrived on a train from Liverpool and found two of his trunks unlocked and five or six dollars stolen. Dr Simpson did not survive the sinking. For years his family thought the letter lost until it turned up in an auction catalogue in New York in April 2012.
