Mudgal to propose new panel for IPL probe

Date:

New Delhi: Justice Mukul Mudgal is on Tuesday expected to propose his panel in the Supreme Court as the apex body resumes hearing the case. It comes a week after he nodded on continuing the probe into the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing and betting scandal.

On April 22, the apex court rejected BCCI’s proposed three-man panel comprising CBI director RK Raghavan, former Calcutta High Court chief Justice JN Patel and former India captain Ravi Shastri after opposition from petitioner and Bihar Cricket Association chief Aditya Verma. The top court then asked Justice Mudgal if he can continue his probe with the help of other investigators.

The top court had asked the Mudgal Committee to submit audio recordings of its proceedings, while allowing BCCI and Srinivasan to hear some portions of it. However, SC directed BCCI and Srinivasan to not reveal anything about the contents of those recordings to anyone. “Any content of the audio recording going out means cricket would be ‘blackened’ in the country,” SC reportedly said.

The apex court had earlier asked Srinivasan to step down from his post as BCCI president until the probe is over, while appointing former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav to take care of the IPL and BCCI affairs, respectively.

The Mudgal committee was set up by the court in October 2013 to probe the spot-fixing allegations, which surfaced during the sixth season of IPL.
