Italy moves UN EU and C’wealth

Date:

New Delhi: Italy is approaching the UN, EU and the Commonwealth nations again to press India to deal with the case of its marines swiftly. Accusing Indian authorities of ‘ambiguous and unreliable’ behaviour, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said she would urge the range of allies.  Rome is annoyed after Indian Supreme Court postponed the hearing of case against marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone till 24 February.  The two are accused of killing two Indian fishermen, mistaking them for pirates.

Earlier this month, Italy had petitioned the UN over the trial of its two marines in India under a strict anti-piracy law. However, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon asked Rome to resolve the issue bilaterally. The EU, which is backing Italy, said the case threatens the future of anti-piracy operations.

Bonino said the case is not bilateral but has international importance and thus, requires a coordinated response, she told local media. She added, “We can’t go and get them by military force” but “several initiatives” are open to the incoming government.
