Thailand’s Maya Beach closes for tourists

Date:

Do you remember watching the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio? The beach that is shown in the film in the famous Maya Beach of Thailand. The beach has closed down for tourists to get some time to recover from the damage done by people. The time for it to re-open is uncertain at the moment. The beach was earlier expected to close down on June 1, but the date got extended to October 3.

The Maya Bay Beach has been a much-visited tourist attraction for some time now after the release of the film. It is surrounded by cliffs on the Ko Phi Phi Leh Island, and the golden sands and crystal clear blue water made it a surreal destination until it got over-populated. Extensive environmental damage has been done to the tiny beach over the past few years with almost 5000 tourists and 200 boats on a daily basis.

The information is a relief to the local environment campaigners as the damage was playing a havoc with the lives of the corals around the bay.
