Bihar to see 50,000 new cases of Leprosy this year

Date:

A survey was carried out under the Leprosy Case Detection Campaign of the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, people from all the Scheduled Caste communities across thirty-eight districts of Bihar to detect leprosy between January 9 to January 13 this year.

Though the result of the survey is not yet announced and is expected to be out in the first week of February, based on the collected samples and the initial reports, nearly 50,000 new cases of leprosy have been indicated, based on the findings by Dr Bijoy Kumar Pandey, the additional director of health and services.

If this number comes out to be true, an all-time high detection of new cases of leprosy will be found in the state.

Between the years 2015 to 2016, the new leprosy cases in the state were 16,185, while the years 2016 to 2017 detected 21,818 cases, and 21,353 new cases were seen in the years 2017 to 2018.

Doctors, volunteers, and on-ground social-health activists determine a variety of factors as the reason for this rise including overcrowding in a room, unhygienic living condition, sharing of beds, and the increased level of awareness.
