5 Days Since Baltimore Bridge Collapse, Why Is Indian Crew On The Ship That Crashed

Date:

New Delhi: As per a report from an American newspaper the 20 Indian crew members of the ship that rammed a bridge in Baltimore are still on the vessel, answering officials and ensuring the ship’s daily routine work is done. The crew members won’t be going anytime soon until the mangled remains of the bridge have been cleared and in the meantime will look after the ship.

When the ship Dali slammed the Francis Scott Key Bridge after losing power, it was en route to Sri Lanka with 4,700 containers. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, one of the Indian crew members was sent to a hospital in Baltimore, where he underwent stitches, and he has since returned to the ship.

Reopening the waterway to one of the busiest routes in the US, clearing the debris and freeing the ship, might take a few weeks. The Maryland governor said on Saturday that the first piece of debris would be removed by officials. The crew members have plenty of food and drink, as well as enough fuel to keep the generators running, according to Chris James, an employee of a consultancy business assisting Synergy Marine, the ship’s management company.

However, Mr. James told NYT that a precise schedule for the ship’s potential extraction from the wreckage is yet unknown. According to Mr. James in the NYT article, the crew might be switched to be sent home after the Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) complete their investigations.

The crew has been commended for alerting the local authorities to the situation via SOS messages, which enabled them to halt a significant portion of traffic before the collision. When the bridge fell, six members of the construction crew who were fixing potholes on it died.

In answer to a question during his weekly media conference, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that there is information indicating there are 21 crew members, 20 of whom are Indian. They are all in excellent physical and mental health. One of them suffered a minor injury that required sutures, which were provided. Furthermore, he returned to the ship.
