Murder in Oz clues in Mangalore

Date:

Mangalore: Policemen from Australia are likely to visit Mangalore soon as they hunt for clues about who killed Prabha Arun Kumar, an Indian techie, in a Sydney park in March this year.

The 41-year-old was on the phone to her husband in India as she walked home from work, when she was stabbed repeatedly in the neck while walking through a public park. After she was found lying injured, she was moved to hospital, where she died the same night.

New CCTV footage obtained and released by the police shows a  person walking at a golf course in the same area where Kumar was killed.

“The person in the footage is one person who we have not been able to identify so far. While it’s not the best footage, we are hoping it might prompt someone’s memory,” said a police officer handling the investigation.

Police had earlier released CCTV footage of Kumar leaving a train station on the night that she was killed.

CCTV footage showed Prabha Arun Kumar on the phone with her husband while walking home, minutes before she was stabbed.

She was sent by her employer, IT firm Mindtree, to Australia in 2012. Kumar’s husband Arun lives in Mangalore with their young daughter.

Detectives from Australia will travel there soon as part of their manhunt. “Considering the nature of the investigation and because it is Prabha’s home town, it is an obvious line of inquiry.

It’s important we don’t speculate but we need to exhaust every line of inquiry,” said Acting Inspector Ritchie Sim said.

Arun Kumar heard his wife pleading with her attacker, The Hindu reported. “He heard her scream for help and then plead with the man not to harm her and take all her belongings if he wanted. Seconds later he heard her scream and say she was stabbed,” a relative of Kumar said.
