FBI Warns Of Election-Related Scams Targeting US Voters Ahead Of 2026 Midterms

Date:

Washington: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cautioned Americans against a rise in election-related financial scams ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, warning that fraudsters are exploiting political campaigns and voter concerns to steal money and personal information.

According to an FBI alert issued in October, scammers are using several tactics, including fake political merchandise websites offering campaign T-shirts and lawn signs. Buyers who make payments through these platforms may never receive their orders.

The agency has also flagged fraudulent investment schemes involving political campaigns. In one such operation, criminals invite people to contribute to an alleged campaign investment pool, promising guaranteed financial returns if their preferred candidate wins. Participants are also encouraged to recruit others to increase their supposed payouts.

The FBI clarified that political contributions are not investments and donors should not expect financial returns or refunds.

Another growing concern is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create convincing fake voices, images and messages impersonating candidates, campaign organisations, government agencies and trusted individuals.

Fraudsters are also posing as legitimate political action committees (PACs) or campaign fundraising bodies to collect donations without any official association.

Voters have additionally been targeted through fake text messages and emails claiming they are not registered to vote. These messages contain links directing recipients to fraudulent registration websites designed to collect personal information and facilitate identity theft.

The FBI has urged voters to verify political fundraising requests through official channels, avoid suspicious links and exercise caution before sharing financial or personal details online.

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission has warned about fake charity sweepstakes that demand fees or sensitive information before releasing supposedly won prizes, advising people never to pay to claim a reward.
